Our Story

W. S. Hornsby Middle School was named in honor of Walter Spurgeon Hornsby, Sr. (1882-1956). He was one of the founders of Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company and the developer of the Hornsby Subdivision. W. S. Hornsby Elementary School was established in 1967 and it was located on Laney Walker Boulevard. The W. S. Hornsby Elementary School moved to Kentucky Ave in 2007. W. S. Hornsby Elementary merged with East August Middle School in 2009 and became W. S. Hornsby K-8.  East Augusta Middle school was established in 1969 under the name of Sand Bar Ferry Jr. High. It became East Augusta in 1974.  In 2020, W. S. Hornsby Elementary and Middle split to house the elementary serving grades K-5 and middle school serving grades 6-8.  W. S. Hornsby Middle School is located downtown Augusta, just minutes from many historical landmarks, Augusta’s River Walk, and 5 minutes from the South Carolina border.

Points of Pride:

  • W. S. Hornsby prides itself in the partnership and sponsorship from the River Road Community Advisory and St. Paul’s Church Panel.
  • In 2019, W.S Hornsby achieved Level 1 High Reliability School Certification.
  • In 2019, W.S. Hornsby students received Individual Math Competition Winners.
  • In 2024 W.S. Hornsby Lady Jaguars and Jaguar basketball teams won the Middle School Championships.
  • In 2024, 1 -8th grade student awarded REACH scholarships
  • In 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 W. S. Hornsby Middle won 1st place in the RCSS Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition.

College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) is Georgia’s statewide accountability system. The CCRPI assesses how well students are prepared for college and careers, and ensures that schools are focused on improving achievement among all students. The index measures student achievement on indicators such as content mastery, student growth on progress, subgroup performance on closing gaps, and various areas including Lexile performance, attendance, and other academic based measurements. Schools earn CCRPI points based on indicators that vary by grade and school level and align with measures of college- and career-readiness.  Each individual component score is on a scale of 0-100.
